IFA urges potato-growers support on National Potato Day

The Irish Farmers’ Association chair, Jason O’Leary, is encouraging consumers to support Irish potato growers this National Potato Day.

“Irish potatoes are a fantastic home-grown product, and our growers work hard to produce a quality crop for consumers throughout the year. National Potato Day is a great opportunity to recognise that work and we are asking shoppers to ensure they purchase Irish potatoes when they are doing their weekly shop.”
Growers have faced a challenging growing season, with difficult weather conditions adding to the already significant costs of production. So, supporting Irish growers helps maintain a strong domestic production base, he said.
“The weather has presented growers with some real challenges this year, particularly through the prolonged drought conditions. At the same time, the cost of producing potatoes has increased across the board, including drought management, fuel, labour and other inputs. Growers have continued to meet the needs of the market despite these pressures.”
“When consumers choose Irish potatoes, they are supporting Irish farm families and helping to keep food production here at home. It is important that we continue to have a viable potato sector producing high-quality food for Irish consumers.”
He added that greater resilience would also be important for the future of the sector. “This year has highlighted the importance of investment in irrigation and water infrastructure, particularly as growers face more variable weather conditions. Alongside this, growers need a sustainable return that reflects the cost and risk of producing potatoes.
“Potatoes are nutritious, versatile and affordable, and Irish growers are proud to produce them. This National Potato Day, we are asking shoppers to support Irish growers and put Irish potatoes in their basket.”
