Tried and tested - Multifarmer gets the thumbs up

It has been almost a year since the Guinan family in Co. Offaly won the free use of a Merlo Multifarmer 34.7, a hybrid of telehandler and tractor, thanks to a competition run by Agriland and Merlo Ireland. Michael, Concepta and son, Kevin, run a busy mixed dairy and beef enterprise with 120 Montbéliarde cows. They also farm over 300 acres predominantly in grass with 15 acres allocated to maize for animal feed. They use two Lely robotic milkers, rear their bull calves to finish, and run a split farm where the Grand Canal divides the land, making machinery manoeuvrability a daily challenge. Cue the Multifarmer! On a rare dry day, recently, we caught up with the Guinans to see how they have been getting on with this versatile, all-rounder

Kevin, who is the main driver of the Multifarmer, says he really likes the spacious cab, joystick controls, and layout, while Michael is impressed by the cab suspension and tilting option. Its ease of operation and comfort are preferred features for both operators.

The Multifarmer has excellent height clearance for filling diet feeders, loading trailers, and stacking bales in sheds. This is bread-and-butter work for the Guinans around the yard.

This Multifarmer comes with a Deutz MF 34.7CS 140hp engine paired with ZF hydrostatic transmission, which provides lots of power when needed, says Kevin. He and Michael like the easy access for daily engine checks, to make sure  everything is ticking over OK. This can help save money on costly repairs down the road, which is very helpful.

This particular Multifarmer was fitted with a new Ronco Agri shear grab, which the Guinans purchased from the Tyrone-based agri-machinery company. They find the cab visibility excellent and operations in tight spaces very good. “As a loader it’s a dream, but it has tractor advantages that makes it unique and that’s a big plus,” says Michael.

Its 7m reach, plenty of lift power, and PTO output on the back end mark the split between its tractor usage and loader duties but it will plough, till, sow, role, and mowe etc. with ease, so you get the best of both worlds!
The Guinans are strongly considering keeping the machine but it ‘depends on what deal they can get’ laughed Michael.

A number of features make this machine shine and Kevin and Michael are particularly impressed with its lighting features. Its well-lit cab and rear-mounted cameras make working in the darker evenings much safer. makes feeding in the dark evenings safer.

Easy access to the rear end for quick implement attachment is very useful, according to the Guinans. Kevin says: “We use it for slurry agitation for which it has plenty of power and we go feeding then. We can leave the tanker on our loader tractor and that saves time every day.”

While the Guinans treat the Multifarmer as a loader first and foremost – 70 per cent of the time it is in the yard, while 30 per cent of the time, it is out on the road or in the field – they have mowed and cultivated with the Multifarmer and put it through its paces like a normal tractor. And they have found it to be a ‘miser on diesel’ and its multi-functional usage freed up their other tractors at key times of year.
