Ploughing 2023 – what’s the story?

The 2023 National Ploughing Championships (the Ploughing) take place in Ratheniska, Co. Laois from September 19-21.

Here, we present just a sample of the many highlights and delights that visitors can expect over this three-day event

  • This year marks the 92nd National Ploughing Championships Machinery and Livestock Exhibition (the Ploughing).
  • More than 1,700 exhibitors featuring: machinery; livestock; agri-business; lifestyle and tourism; house and home; energy; innovation; forestry; wellness; and much more will be present this year.
  • The trade exhibition will occupy more than 150 acres.
  • Up to 300,000 visitors are expected to attend.
  • More than 320 of the most-skilled ploughers from all around the country will be involved in ploughing masterclasses.
  • There will be tractor, horse and vintage ploughing on display, as well as loy digging, which is a traditional method of turning the sod using a specially designed spade.

The Ploughing has an economic impact of more than €50m, according to organisers.

  • The Machine of the Year award will be open to all machines launched/manufactured since the last Ploughing Championships (2022). Entries must currently be in manufacture and all machines should have a practical use in agriculture and be exhibiting at the Ploughing.
  • Machinery – millions of euros worth of agricultural and plant machinery with cutting-edge technology will be on display, while technical experts and sales advisers will be on hand to give advice and answer questions.
  • Agri-food fayre – discover a vast array of quality home-grown cuisine and products from local farmers and food artisans.
  • The Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena returns with a platform to showcase the latest innovations to the marketplace, and provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate groundbreaking developments to international markets and potential buyers.
  • The National Brown Bread Baking competition finals will give bakers a chance to win a top prize of €15,000 and the honour of having their loaf sold for 12 months in all 150 Aldi stores, nationwide.
  • Quality livestock at the Ploughing – an ultimate showcase of all livestock farming needs, breed societies, live exhibits and displays, health, genetics, feed, equipment and all the farm services required for the livestock producer.
